Corporate payment specialist AirPlus International takes responsibility for unavoidable emissions by financing a climate protection project that reduces greenhouse gases based on its carbon footprint, making a measurable impact.

AirPlus has been certified with the Impact Label of the international climate protection organization myclimate for the year 2022. The certification confirms that all the company's CO2 emissions have been calculated and that a corresponding contribution has been invested into climate protection projects that significantly reduce greenhouse gases. This underscores the efforts being taken by the company to contribute towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

For all greenhouse gas emissions that cannot currently be avoided in the course of its business activities, AirPlus provides financial support for a climate protection project in Uganda. This is managed by the climate protection organization myclimate, which currently promotes climate protection and sustainable development across 174 projects in 45 countries.

AirPlus has already introduced targeted measures to reduce its carbon footprint in the past: These include reducing paper consumption, switching to green electricity at its headquarters and offering employees cost-effective alternatives to private motorized transport. With defined standards of conduct when requesting offers, AirPlus reinforces environmentally friendly behavior on the part of suppliers.

CO2 footprint as a basis for climate protection

AirPlus has contributed to climate financing based on its measured footprint to save CO2 through the myclimate climate protection project. This means that all direct and indirect emissions from annual business activities are taken into account, including gas and heating consumption as well as CO2 emissions during business trips. The tracking number noted in the label enables transparent insight into the underlying accounting requirements and the selected climate protection project.

Forest regeneration in Uganda

AirPlus supports the climate protection project for the reforestation of forests in Uganda by smallholders. This enables the establishment of long-term sustainable land use and ensures that carbon is absorbed by the trees and stored in their biomass. At the same time, biodiversity is promoted, with the only source of water in this forest area being protected. The initiative also makes a significant contribution to improving community welfare by maintaining the community's source of income through the protection of valuable tree species. The carbon offset project can contribute to the achievement of nine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), four of which are verified according to Plan Vivo's leading standard for community land use projects. These include:

  • SDG (1) No Poverty
  • SDG (6) Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG (13) Climate Action
  • SDG (15) Life on Land

The reforestation projects also meet Plan Vivo's highest standard, which was developed specifically for forest projects. This is comparable to the UN's Gold Standard, which recognizes high-quality climate protection projects and ensures that sustainable development is advanced in the respective project region.

Oliver Wagner, CEO of AirPlus International, emphasizes the importance of the company's contribution to climate protection: "Advancing climate change is currently the greatest challenge our society is facing. We all feel the urgent need to change our habits. As a company, we also have a responsibility to question our business activities and find solutions that better protect our climate. At AirPlus, we have recognized this for some time. More than ten years ago, for example, we introduced our Green Company Account, the pioneer in climate-friendly payment solutions. Since then, we have consistently pursued our ambition to extend this to all our product solutions. As the first certified climate-friendly financial services provider, our goal is to help shape our industry and encourage our competitors to move in the same direction. We are pleased to have myclimate as a competent partner at our side for this."
