Paying safely online – with 3D Secure

  • What is 3D Secure?

    3D Secure is an authentication protocol that provides an additional layer of security for online purchases: During the purchase or booking process the online merchant and the credit card holder are identified as legitimate participants in the respective payment process. An increasing number of online merchants worldwide are participating in 3D Secure. Card users must register for 3D Secure to make purchases from these merchants. Mastercard offers 3D Secure under the name Mastercard® SecureCode™; Visa refers to it as Verified by Visa.

  • Why is 3D Secure mobile TAN particularly safe?

    The new 3D Secure mobile TAN system is based on a text message/SMS being sent to the cardholder's mobile phone every time he/she makes an online purchase. Because each mobile TAN is known only to the cardholder whose mobile phone it is sent to, 3D Secure is highly fraud-proof. To offer payment using 3D Secure to their customers, shop operators are required to register with MasterCard and/or Visa and to meet strict security standards.

  • How can you activate 3D Secure mobile TAN?

    To use 3D Secure, please register in the AirPlus Business Travel Portal at www.airplus.com/login. You can activate 3D Secure mobile TAN and save your personal mobile phone number immediately after registering:

    • To access the 3D Secure section, please click Credit Card Management. Enter your mobile phone number and reenter it to confirm, then accept the terms of use.
    • If your registration is successful, AirPlus will send a confirmation by text message/SMS to that mobile phone number.

  • Do you have to register your AirPlus cards separately?

    No, your registration automatically applies to both cards and to all subsequent AirPlus cards.

  • You have been blocked from 3D Secure. What can you do?

    For security reasons, when an incorrect mobile TAN is entered repeatedly during the payment process, access to 3D Secure is blocked. To unblock, please call our customer service for assistance at +49 851 2136 9250. Note that you will be asked to provide your credit card details for identification.

  • Have you been asked by e-mail to update your 3D Secure data? Be aware: Fraud risk!

    AirPlus, Mastercard and Visa never send out e-mails asking cardholders to update their data. E-mails of this kind are attempted fraud. Do not enter any details and notify AirPlus immediately.
