Study: Sharing Economy forces Business Travel Industry to Rethink

Study: Sharing Economy forces Business Travel Industry to Rethink

Neu-Isenburg, 24/08/2016

AirPlus publishes third part of its “International Travel Management Study”

On August 24, financial services provider AirPlus International is publishing the third part of its “AirPlus International Travel Management Study” (ITMS) for 2016. The latest edition focuses on the sharing economy’s impact on business travel. Its title “Sharing Economy – a Good Option for Travelers?” already suggests that so far suppliers such as AirBnB, Uber or Car2Go have not exactly been welcomed with open arms by the business travel industry.

The ITMS examines the interaction of sharing economy and business travel from several perspectives:

• Do the interests of companies, travel managers and business travelers differ?

• What challenges does the sharing economy present to conventional business travel?

• Are there differences in acceptance worldwide?

• How can the sharing economy be integrated more seamlessly into business travel?

• What trends are to be expected in the future?

With regard to the economy, Michiel Verhaagen, Global Head of Sales at AirPlus, comments on the study, “For the business travel industry, there is no bypassing the sharing economy. Suppliers such as AirBnB are already opening up towards it by creating designated corporate portals. It is now up to the established stakeholders to take sharing literally and intensify the dialog with the new market players.”

Since 2005, international market research firm 2hm has been conducting the ITMS on a yearly basis on behalf of AirPlus. For the first time, talks with more than 120 in-house travel planners complement the independent study.
