Oktoberfest 2023: Bleisure trips on the rise – Munich top destination for business trips in Germany

Neu-Isenburg, 12 September 2023

The combining of business and leisure travel is becoming more and more of a trend. Oktoberfest should once again provide a good reason for this, as an evaluation by corporate payment specialist AirPlus shows.

Business travelers are increasingly combining their professional meetings with a private stay. This trend towards "bleisure" or "workation" is reflected in recent travel data: 15.6 percent of business trips started on a weekend this year, while in 2019, this was only the case for 12.8 percent. In the near future, Oktoberfest will once again provide a popular opportunity for "bleisure" trips to Munich.

During the last Wiesn in 2022, the daily rate of airline tickets destined for Munich was 50 percent above the annual average, as an evaluation by corporate payment expert AirPlus International shows*. Most German Wiesn tourists came from Hamburg, followed closely by Düsseldorf and Berlin. Within Europe, the Bavarian capital attracted a particularly large number of Belgian, Italian, and Swiss business travelers.

Even outside Oktoberfest, Munich has been the most important destination in Germany for international business travelers so far this year: 22.6 percent of trips to Germany have been to the Bavarian capital. Frankfurt follows in second place with 20.6 percent and Hamburg in third place with a share of 15.5 percent, according to the AirPlus Business Travel Index.
