Business travelers are curious about other people’s data and careless when it comes to protecting their own. These are the findings of a survey recently conducted by AirPlus International, a leading provider of business travel payment solutions.
While more than 90 percent of business travelers are more or less uninhibited to glance at the laptops of people sitting next to them, only slightly more than 33 percent try to protect their data from prying eyes by continually applying a privacy filter. While 52 percent of respondents work on their laptop during train rides, 55 percent do so during flights. Hence, it comes as no surprise that the proximity to the people in adjacent seats entices travelers to take a peek at others’ laptops. Almost one third (31 percent) openly state they are “curious to know what other people are working on.” Another 59 percent say they take a peek “without actually wanting to.” Only one tenth claim they respect their fellow travelers’ privacy; a mere 9.4 percent say they never look at other people’s laptops.
Business travelers may be inquisitive, but many handle their own data carelessly. Only 37 percent of respondents say they use privacy filters regularly to protect their data from strangers’ glances. More than one third (36 percent) of business travelers do not use privacy filters at all, 27 percent use them occasionally, and one out of five (21 percent) is unfamiliar with these shields – a shocking number suggesting business data is left wide open to be viewed by fellow travelers and perhaps even by competitors.
For the representative online survey AirPlus International interviewed 475 people throughout Germany from July 10 to 12, 2019.
