Yesterday and today:
Our Success Story

How AirPlus has consistently developed the business of travel payment over the past 25 years

AirPlus continues the tradition of UATP, the first payment system worldwide for business travel. Already back in 1936, airline pilots and personnel were using UATP for billing. The logo of that UATP card still appears on AirPlus cards today. In 1986, eleven airline companies formed AirPlus Limited Card Services to continue the tradition of that brand. From that collaboration, the Lufthansa AirPlus Servicekarten GmbH was born in 1989.

  • 1990-2001: The early years

1990 AirPlus issues the first AirPlus-UATP cards for the billing of airline tickets for business travel.

1992 AirPlus offers companies a payment solution for all expenses incurred during a trip with the AirPlus Eurocard. That same year, AirPlus launches the world’s first credit card with a chip.

1993 With the AirPlus VISA Card, AirPlus becomes the first to issue a double card for frequent travelers.

1995 As a pioneer in business travel management, AirPlus introduces an analysis tool that still remains the standard today for evaluating flight costs.

1996 AirPlus breaks into European markets.

1997 AirPlus is the first provider to offer its business clients the possibility of consolidating data from various credit card providers and evaluating it.

1999 Together with the Bavarian State Bank, AirPlus issues a new corporate card duo, thus focusing on business-to-business transactions.

2000 The new brand AirPlus International is created, under which AirPlus products and solutions are now to be marketed.

2001 AirPlus launches a customer-driven business travel portal, providing travel managers and business travelers with a single internet address for all information and services.

  • 2002-2006: Expanding all over the globe

2002 AirPlus International Inc., New York, and AirPlus International Ltd., London are founded. AirPlus enters into a strategic alliance with British Airways.

2003 The AirPlus Information Manager goes online as the one-and-only digital solution for the analysis and monitoring of corporate travel budgets. This new tool allows the detailed evaluation of all travel expenses globally.

AirPlus establishes a subsidiary in Switzerland. AirPlus International AG, headquartered in Zurich, is responsible for all AirPlus business throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein. At the end of the year, a new regional headquarters opens in Hong Kong – a key step in the Asian growth markets. AirPlus acquires Continental Airlines as a partner.

2004 The AirPlus Corporate Card appears in Germany in a new design with an enhanced service package. AirPlus thus sets new standards in the German corporate credit card market and is the only provider worldwide with a corporate card that has a Miles & More collection function. The international network of partners continues to expand: New partners include Postbank, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, TAP Portugal and JCB.

2005 AirPlus now offers its products in 28 countries. The expert in business travel management brings on board Europe’s two leading rental car firms, AVIS and Europcar, as new partners. In October, AirPlus introduces the virtual credit card solution “A.I.D.A.” in Great Britain.

2006 A milestone for the AirPlus Corporate Card in Germany: AirPlus is now an independent provider of credit cards for those on the road.

A partnership with China Merchants Bank enables companies in China to easily pay for travel expenses and manage travel efficiently.

  • 2007-2010: AirPlus goes green

2007 AirPlus still grows successfully in markets worldwide, coming ever closer to achieving its goal set for 2012 of being the preferred global payment and reporting provider in business travel management.

Since September 2007, companies for the first time can automatically account for climate protection contributions and evaluate them in detail with AirPlus – an innovation in business travel management: With this industry-first solution from AirPlus, companies can face up to their environmental responsibility, setting a trend in corporate social responsibility. AirPlus receives the Business Travel Show Innovation Award 2007 for this.

2008 AirPlus continues its successful international development and expands its presence in Asia. AirPlus enters into a strategic partnership with Star Alliance member Air China. From now on, companies in China can avail of the Air China AirPlus Company Account and for the first time, have the chance of billing their business travel through a lodged card.

By establishing its subsidiary in China, AirPlus is set to accommodate strong growth in the Chinese business travel market and the resulting need for professional travel management solutions. The AirPlus Payment Management Co. Ltd., headquartered in Shanghai, will provide increased support for local customers and further accelerate implementation of services in the region.

2009 AirPlus enters into a strategic alliance with Banco Santander, strengthening its presence in Latin America.

With its industry-first AirPlus Green Reports, AirPlus offers businesses yet another option for their environmental commitment: This new solution delivers transparent CO2 reporting for a company‘s business flights.

AirPlus also wins renowned industry awards: The EPCA Award for the AirPlus Meeting Solution and the Best Practice Award from the Travel Industry Club for the AirPlus climate protection solution.

2010 AirPlus is awarded for the optimal use of its customer feedback. In the competition “Deutschlands kundenorientierteste Dienstleister 2010 (Germany’s Most Customer-Oriented Service Provider 2010)” the company received a special prize in the category “Monitoring”. What’s more, AirPlus placed among Germany’s top service providers.

AirPlus recognizes the increasing importance of climate protection, offering companies a flexible solution: AirPlus Green Reports quickly and automatically issue a transparent report of CO2 emissions accrued from business flights. That greatly simplifies a company’s commitment to the environment.

AirPlus provides its corporate cardholders even more service and security with a mobile portal, tailored specifically to the needs of business travelers. AirPlus cardholders on the go have direct access at any time to the key functions of the online card account.

  • 2011-2016: Into the mobile age

2011 With the new AirPlus Debit Account, travel managers can now avoid credit card fees. The AirPlus Debit Account also provides a number of additional benefits known from the successful AirPlus Company Account: It can be used with more than 250 airlines as well as for train tickets, rental car or hotel bookings and travel agency services.

AirPlus collaborates with the financial institutions Santander, BNP Paribas, UBS and Nordea to offer global companies an optimal solution for their travel expense management worldwide. With NextGen, cooperating partners provide a complete solution for professional business travel management that integrates leading corporate cards, lodged cards and MIS solutions.

Due to significant customer acquisition, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, AirPlus opens a service hub in Singapore to guarantee maximum customer service and top quality consulting.

2012 In Italy, AirPlus debuts the Green Company Account, the world’s first complete climate-neutral lodged card. The company’s power of innovation is once again reflected by A.I.D.A. receiving the Diamond Award from Busche-Verlag in the category “Innovation”.

To further expand this power of innovation, AirPlus establishes its Research & Development (R&D) team. Its members are engaged, away from day-to-day operations, in developing ideas and prototypes in preparation for market launches. In doing so, the R&D team relies increasingly on collaboration with partners and pilot customers.

2013 AirPlus’ diverse partnerships have resulted in the development of innovative products including the mobile payment service myWallet, global payment solutions for HRS’ corporate customers, options for paying for taxis without cash via the AirPlus Company Account, and virtual payment solutions for travel agencies from AirPlus and Amadeus. A key innovation is the mobile A.I.D.A. service for virtual payment that will play an increasingly important role. These include the Sustainability Gold Medal 2013 awarded for AirPlus’ green product solutions, environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility.

2014 AirPlus introduces its Green Company Account to the German market. As the world’s first completely climate-neutral lodged card, this product is now used in 15 countries. It has contributed greatly to the sustainable organization of business travel for companies in multiple industries. In addition to AirPlus Green Reports and AirPlus Carbon Offset, the AirPlus Green Company Account is now the third green solution in the company portfolio.

AirPlus is again honored this year for its product and service achievements: Kreditkarte.net selected the full-package solution AirPlus Company Account as the winner from among all corporate cards tested in 2014 and the Business Travel Award for Best Corporate Card Provider in 2014 also went to AirPlus.

Ever since, AirPlus has supported the industry’s professionalization with innovative payment solutions and continued to expand its business globally. What was once a small, highly specialized firm is now Germany’s leading provider of solutions for business travel management.

2015 and 2016 held numerous changes for AirPlus. The company met these challenges successfully and continued to grow. AirPlus sold its Acquiring portfolio, Acceptance, to focus on business travel management, its core business.

The EU regulation on interchange fees has altered the framework of conditions for issuers of credit cards. AirPlus responded to the requirements stipulated in Brussels and adjusted its product offerings accordingly. AirPlus received several awards for its services, credit card offerings and innovations, including the title of Pioneer for Sustainable Financial Products for the Travel Industry for its Green Company Account.
